When tragedy struck at Mad River Mountain only a few weeks ago many had lost hope of a normal ski season in Ohio. For many, including myself and the other powder hounds at Aspen Ski and Board we thought the lack of shelter would mean time spent in cars instead of the cozy lodge.Though we all knew that we would still make the trek if the snow gods smiled upon us, we had resigned ourselves to the idea of lonely lift rides and bitter yardsales when we caught an edge. However; when we heard that Peak Resorts would be installing a sparkly new facility in place of the revered old lodge we got giddy all over again. The old lodge will be remembered fondly for it’s stained glass windows, old wooden tables that rocked more than grandpa in his favorite chair, and fries from the cafeteria that substituted for a whole meal but this year we have something else to look forward to.
This year Thomas & Marker Construction Co. have already made tremendous progress on the building, pouring some 15,000sq/ft of reinforced concrete foundation for the new building(s) to be built upon. Sources say the new lodge will be similar to the layout of the previous and boasts “Two new buildings, which are connected by enclosed corridors, will include guest services ranging from food and beverage services, a retail shop, a bar, ample handicap accessible restrooms, a full-service kitchen and special events including live entertainment” all framed and roofed by November 1st! Total completion and grand opening is slanted to be on December the 1st. So fear not fellow Ohioans, our beloved little mountain will still be the warm home it always has been.
There may not be names etched into the support beams of the grand room, or stairs that have boot paths worn into them, but with time we can make a home for ourselves in this new lodge. So please, get your tickets! Come out to Mad River Mountain when the season starts because we’ll be there having a blast, and you should too.
Here's a rendering of what the lodge will look like this upcoming season!
